The day before the trip

…And I’m still not packed. I think the frequent flying between Singapore and Australia during my uni days have made me the most half-arsed, can’t be bothered packer around. I still remember my first few trips to and from countries; I’ll be done packing at least three days in advance, with a to-do list to help, and a checklist in case I forget anything. Nowadays, I still keep a checklist, but that’s about it. Stuff’s thrown together at the last minute – can’t risk creasing the clothes for too long, you know?

Today wasn’t too condusive for packing anyway. Went about the town with my sis and her friend, Oddish (who’s name is really Audrey, but the pokémon nickname was bestowed on her since she was nine, and it stuck), and ended up at Swensens for dinner with them. Swensens good, ice cream yummy. Especially their chocolate freckles and yam flavours.

Oh, and did I mention I blew $50+ on cloths and buttons at Spotlight AGAIN today? All this before the trip! Eeps.

I just found out that my uncle actually reads my blog on occasion. Looks like I’ll have to watch what I write about the family in the future. Hur hur.

For once I’m revelling in the fact that the Aussie dollar is stronger against the Singapore one. Just went to the money changer to convert some cash since I’m a little dry right now, and the darlings at the changer were buying Aussie dollars at S$1.25. Happy days!

On another note, I’ve just found out that Kinokuniya Australia DOES do country wide deliveries, so my sister can still purchase heaps of manga, and me, a truck load of japanese craft books. (Previously, we were both lamenting the fact that Kinokuniya doesn’t have a branch in Melbourne, only in Sydney. How were we, ardent fans of the japanese bookstore, going to get our fill of books when we’ve moved to Melbourne? Hopping on a plane to Sydney isn’t an option, as cheap as Jetstar’s domestic flights are.) More happy days!

And finally, I’ve changed my masthead in anticipation of the upcoming Melbourne trip. It’s just a little illo I did of the Yarra River. Will continue to post from Melbourne since my darling Suzy (laptop) is coming with me on the trip. Woot!

I can’t wait – just five more days till the family and I are off to the most livable city in the world for a fortnight! I can’t wait!

As it is, I already have a list of stuff I wanna do and go see while I’m there – time permitting, of course. Heaps of second hand bookstores, antique stores, gelato parlours (Trampoline, here I come!) and definitely Lincraft. Hopefully there’ll be enough time museum visits and jaunts along Brunswick Street too. I need to go back this cafe (who’s name escapes me at the moment) for the most gorgy potato scallops ever.

All this cramped into two weeks, amidst appointments with banks, schools, and other weird important sounding companies/institutions that only my parents know about at this moment.

But oh, the fun! Did I mention I can’t wait?

Of trees and houses

If I don’t see another florist wire in my life, I’ll be a happy camper.

My sister’s in the midst of a geography project in school at the mo, and she, with a group of four other classmates, has to come up with a presentation on volcanoes in a couple of weeks’ time. This presentation is weighted rather heftily (50% of subject area), and thus involves charts, role-play and a model for demonstration purposes.

As I was bored beyond the Milky Way when she first mentioned the project at home, I voluteered to spruce up her model with trees and houses so as to make her context more realistic. You know, red goo gushing out of volcano and engulfing fake trees and a miniature village would be more appealing to the eyes than just red goo gushing out engulfing nothing. She loved the idea (and so did her friends, just because they’re not the ones doing it) and so I started twisting trees out of florist wire. I got the idea when I was a first year archi student during a project that involved lots of trees in the model and when I was pretty strapped for cash. They provide the density and look pretty too.

Of trees, a house and a snowman

(The alpine scene above was just me having fun – I needed something to stick the completed trees in, so I got a piece of foam and created a little scene, complete with snowman outside the house!)

Now after 20 odd trees, I’m tired. But with around another 40 more to go. Not to mention the little houses I still have to saw out of balsa wood. Ye gawds, what have I gotten myself into?

I should get paid for my services, damn it. Even if the clients are just a bunch of bratty fourteen year olds. Excluding my sister of course. Hur hur.
